How Do We Shape Healthy Eating Habits from a Young Age?

It seems to be a struggle nowadays to get children to eat healthy food. The goal for any parent is to get their child to eat awesome, healthy, nourishing, and delicious food.

At Razum International School, we offer Nutrition Kitchen as an Extra Curriculum Activity, which helps teach children about healthy cooking. We believe if we can be consistent with food introductions, invite children into the kitchen to cook, and offer education about why we choose the foods we choose, perhaps we’ll have more success in promoting a healthier lifestyle for children.

What life skills does cooking teach children?

Cooking is a valuable life skill that teaches children about nutrition and food safety, as well as building math, science, literacy, and fine motor skills. Cooking encourages children's thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. It also allows children the opportunity to use the knowledge they have and apply it by counting, measuring, following a sequence and directions.

Fruit smoothies

Fruit smoothies are perfect for a child since it’s naturally sweet, loaded with nutrition from fruit, and tastes great! You simply blend up the fruits and they can be a healthy breakfast and a snack.

Ingredients for Mango smoothie:

  • 3 cups frozen mango (or fresh)

  • 1/2 banana (room temperature, broken into chunks)

  • ½ cup water

  • ½ cup milk (or non-dairy milk is better)

  • 5 ice cubes

  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth. Enjoy it together with your kids!
